The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s (HUD) Capital Fund Program announced more than $11 million in federal funding Monday to support 21 public housing authorities across New Mexico.

Among those housing authorities is the village of Cuba, which will receive $91, 857.

“Every New Mexican deserves a safe and secure place to call home,” U.S. Sen. Martin Heinrich said. “This funding of nearly $12 million will help local housing authorities ensure that public housing in our state is safe and livable for New Mexicans.”

New Mexico will receive a total of $11,855,081 in federal funding from HUD. The grants are an increase of more than $133,000 from last year’s funding level. This annual funding program for public housing authorities supports building, renovating and modernizing public housing across New Mexico.

“Stable housing changes lives," U.S. Rep. Melanie Stansbury said. "This money from the HUD Capital Fund Program means more New Mexicans will have access to newly built or modernized facilities. The nearly $12 million coming to our state will help create lasting generational change."

Housing authorities can use the funding to complete large-scale improvements such as replacing roofs or making energy-efficient upgrades to heating systems and installing water conservation measures.

“I’m proud to welcome this critical investment from the Biden Administration that will help improve affordable housing in New Mexico,” U.S. Sen. Ben Ray Luján said. “This funding of nearly $12 million will help support local housing authorities across our state, ensuring more opportunities for New Mexicans to access a modernized living facility.”

Funded through HUD’s Capital Fund Program, public housing authorities can utilize these investments to provide critical funding for the development, financing, modernization, and management improvements of public housing developments.
