Dark clouds appear over the Rio Rancho area on Sunday. While parts of the metro area received more than 1.5 inches of precipitation, Rio Rancho did not receive much, according to the National Weather Service of Albuquerque.

The National Weather Service has issued a flash flood watch for Thursday afternoon and evening.

From noon to midnight Thursday, June 27, the service says the Middle Rio Grande Valley, including Rio Rancho and the Albuquerque Metro area, could see flash flooding from excessive rainfall.

"Excessive runoff may result in flooding of rivers, creeks, streams and other low-lying and flood-prone locations," according to the watch details. "Torrential rainfall in excess of 2 inches per hour will create rapid runoff that can quickly produce flash flooding. Urban drainages will be particularly susceptible to dangerous flash flooding."

Currently, Thursday's forecast calls for showers and thunderstorms, ranging from 60% in the afternoon and 40% in the evening. Friday's forecast is mostly clear, with rain returning to the forecast over the weekend.

Saturday sees a 20% chance of showers and storms in the afternoon, increasing to 40% that night. Sunday has a 50% chance of precipitation.

Monday's forecast shows a 40% chance of rain and storms in the day, decreasing to 20% for the evening. Tuesday has a 30% chance of showers and storms.

The NWS recommends monitoring the forecast and being prepared to take action should the flash flood watch shift to a warning.
