Stephen Lewis Denson, about 67, of Placitas, was summoned in Bernalillo Dec. 9 for embezzlement amounting to more than $20,000.

A Sandoval County Deputy responded to the 1500 block of Idalia Road in Bernalillo on a civil dispute call after a man reported his his Toyoto 4Runner stolen. He said he lent the vehicle to his roommate, identified as Denson.

When Denson asked to borrow the vehicle, the owner gave him the keys. He said Denson called him and said he was in Louisiana with the 4Runner. He said he told Denson that if the vehicle wasn’t returned by Dec. 4, he would file a report.

He then said he received a text from Denson on Dec. 8 saying the 4Runner would arrive at an unspecified retail/commercial location via 18-wheeler.

The owner tried to ask for the vehicle back again but Denson blocked his number. The vehicle was then reported as stolen in the National Crime Intelligence Center.

Because the amount of the embezzlement was more than $20,000, Denson will face the harshest embezzlement penalties and charges; this will include a fine of up to $10,000 as well as up to nine years in prison.
