Adam Smith, 45, of Rio Rancho, was arrested for stabbing his brother in-law and attempting to stab his sister on June 22.

According to a criminal complaint filed with the Magistrate Court in Bernalillo, Rio Rancho Police officers responded to a stabbing at a residence in the Corrales Heights area.

When officers arrived, the brother in-law was being treated for multiple stab wounds by EMS. There was a noticeably large stab wound along his chest. Reportedly, there was blood on the floor to the door of the home, and more trails of blood leading to a larger blood stain on the kitchen floor.

Police were able to talk brother in-law’s wife about the incident.

She told police that she and her husband were getting ready to go for a walk and her husband was looking around for his hat before they left. She said she thought her husband may have accused her brother, Smith, of taking his hat and withholding it from him.

During the argument, she said her brother exited the garage with a hunting knife and swung at both her and her husband. Her husband then fought her brother off while she screamed for her mother to call police.

She said she jumped on Smith’s back as he stabbed her husband. She was able to get it out of his hands, but he attempted to grab another knife. She remained on his back to prevent him from doing so.

Both men were taken to nearby hospitals.

Smith is facing charges of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. If convicted, he could face up to 4 1/2 years in prison.
