RIO RANCHO — An Albuquerque man was arrested for allegedly threatening a man with a gun at Walmart.

Adam Edwards, 49, was arrested June 19 for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon at Walmart on Unser Boulevard.

According to a criminal complaint filed by Rio Rancho Police, the victim reported that a man had “racked” a firearm and threatened to shoot him before pointing the weapon at him.

Edwards confirmed that an incident had occurred and that he had a firearm on the floorboard of his vehicle, according to the report. Officers also saw a black handgun on the floor of the car as Edwards exited it.

Edwards told officers he was sitting in his vehicle in the Walmart parking lot when he saw a white pickup truck doing donuts in the lot. He said this upset him, and as the truck passed his vehicle, he confronted the driver. According to Edwards, he told the driver, “If you miss, I’m going to hurt you,” meaning if the driver failed to navigate a curb and struck Edwards’ vehicle, he would retaliate.

Edwards told officers that he retrieved his handgun from the center console when the driver pulled up next to him, racked the slide, and pointed it toward the floorboard of his own vehicle but denied ever pointing the firearm directly at the driver. He said the driver then drove off, and Edwards remained on scene until law enforcement arrived.

The victim told police that after pulling up next to Edwards’ vehicle, Edwards produced a firearm, racked the slide, and pointed it directly at him. Fearing for his life, he left the scene and called law enforcement.

Officers reviewed surveillance footage from Walmart, which showed Edwards producing a firearm and pointing it in the direction of the victim’s vehicle.

Edwards could face a year and a half in prison if convicted.
