Steven Montoya, 36, of Rio Rancho, was arrested June 17 for non-residential burglary, possession of a controlled substance and possession of burglary tools at U-Haul Moving and Storage on Southern Boulevard.

According to a criminal complaint filed by Rio Rancho Police, officers responding to an alarm were told a man was attempting to open the bay doors to the facility.

Montoya apparently parked his go-cart at the U-Haul as he went to retrieve gas. He said his go-cart was having mechanical issues and that's why he was pushing it. Montoya then said he went to the north side of the property on his go-cart, where he found a shovel. When officers asked about the bay doors, he denied all allegations and confirmed he was on property.

Officers confirmed via surveillance footage that Montoya was attempting to steal a key to one of the rental vehicles.

When police searched Montoya, they found meth and a small metal rod with magnets that police believed to be burglary tools.

Montoya could face 4 and 1/2 years in prison if convicted.
