A shooting Saturday at former President Donald Trump's rally in Butler, Pennsylvania is being investigated as an attempted assassination.

The shooter is dead, according to reports, and Trump’s campaign says he is “fine” after being whisked off stage.

Trump later said on social media that he "knew immediately that something was wrong in that I heard a whizzing sound, shots, and immediately felt the bullet ripping through the skin. Much bleeding took place, so I realized then what was happening. GOD BLESS AMERICA!”

Here’s how some local elected officials reacted to the shooting:

U.S. Sen. Martin Heinrich

There is NO place for violence in political discourse.

"While we wait for more information on what happened in Butler, PA, today, we must be clear: We can disagree on any number of things, but violence will never be tolerated.”

U.S. Sen. Ben Ray Lujan

Violence has absolutely no place in our politics. I’m grateful for the quick response of Secret Service and law enforcement personnel who rushed the former president to safety. My thoughts are with the former president and his family, and I hope he recovers quickly.”

U.S. Rep. Melanie Stansbury

"Political violence has no place in our democracy. Thank you to the Secret Service and other law enforcement officials who worked quickly to keep people safe. I wish those injured a quick recovery and prayers for the life lost."

Rio Rancho Mayor Gregg Hull

"I am appalled by this unspeakable act of violence. When opinions differ, violence is never the answer. It is time to step back and begin to communicate with each other. We are all Americans, we are better than this."

State Senate Republican Whip Craig Brandt

As part of a joint statement released by New Mexico Senate Republicans:

“We are deeply shocked and outraged to learn about the assassination attempt of President Trump. This senseless act of violence is an attack not only on our president but on the very fabric of our democracy,” the statement read. “This fraught moment in American history warrants solidarity. We must stand united against violence lest we degrade into a third-world country. We must let the law enforcement agencies do their work to bring the perpetrators to justice and ensure the safety of our nation. Now more than ever, it is crucial for us to uphold the principles of peace, justice and the rule of law.”

State Rep. Joshua Hernandez

Today we witnessed a heinous act of cowardice from those who wish to divide our nation. There is no place for this kind of violence in the America I know. Now is the time to come together, not to spark more hate or division in the wake of this terrible day.”

State Rep. Kathleen Cates

"I am horrified by this act of violence and will continue to communicate that acts of violence should never be tolerated. Our country is a beacon to the world, that free speech should be protected even if we do not agree with it. This act of violence further divides our country and does not make room for the conversations we need to move forward. For those of us who have dedicated our lives to public service and then suffered criminal attacks, should come together and clearly protect each other from these non democratic movements."

State Rep. Alan Martinez

“Political violence has no place in a civilized society. I'm glad to hear that former President Trump has been treated and released. I hope we can all take a breath of relief and thank God this was not a much more terrible outcome.”

Sandoval County Commissioner Jay Block

“If you can't put your political opponents in jail in America, you try to kill them. Thank God President Trump is OK. This is on Biden and the radical left for ratcheting up the lies and hate speech towards Trump. We will win.”
