Charles Kauffman, 55, of Albuquerque, who was arrested for the murder of Elizabeth Barela last month, was indicted Feb. 15 by a grand jury in the 13th Judicial District Court.

The jury found probable cause, if Kauffman is convicted in a trial, to have the charge reflect murder in the second degree.

This decision comes nearly a month after Corrales police found Barela dead a search for Kauffman, who was at large at the time, commenced. Kauffman was arrested Jan. 31.

Kauffman’s indictment does not mean he has been found guilty by a jury or sentenced.

The maximum sentence for Kauffman would be life in prison and a $17,500 fine. He would get an additional nine years if found guilty for tampering, firearm receipt, aggravated assault and the vehicle theft charges he also faces.
