BERNALILLO — Two Rio Rancho students were announced the 2024 junior Sandoval County treasurers last month.

Jennifer A. Taylor, Sandoval County treasurer, announced that Mario Templeton, a Rio Rancho High School senior, and Giavanna Almanzar, a junior from the ASK Academy, are the 2024 Junior County Treasurers for Sandoval County. Taylor visited both students individually Sept. 16 at the Loma Colorado Library and the ASK Academy, respectively.

During the meet-and-greet, Taylor provided the students with an overview outlining program activities and expectations for the next several months. The program will continue with one-on-one meetings with the treasurer throughout the fall semester.

“With the success of the 2023 Junior County Treasurer Program, we knew this opportunity should continue for another year,” Taylor said in a release. “Both candidates display a wealth of talent and interest in local government. One program element is that they will jointly conduct a mock Board of Finance meeting later in the year.”

They will also learn how the county collects property taxes and how the money is allocated to various groups. They will also be required to attend a Sandoval County Commission meeting, attend a Board of Finance meeting, attend a Board of Finance meeting, and attend a Sandoval County Investment Committee meeting.

Upon completion of these activities, each junior county treasurer receives a plaque of recognition at a county commission meeting.

The program is offered to one junior and one senior from Sandoval County high schools to fill the roles of junior treasurers.
