The New Mexico Department of Corrections identified the inmate who died Dec. 5 at the Southern New Mexico Correctional Facility outside of Las Cruces as Richard Martin Lee Cresap.

Corrections officials say Cresap was found in his cell with injuries that suggest an assault. New Mexico State Police are investigating Cresap’s death as a homicide.

Cresap, 22, was serving a sentence for second-degree murder in Rio Rancho. He received a plea deal in the March 2021 murder of 15-year-old Alex Jackson and was sentenced to 15 years in prison last July.

Cresap was charged in 2021 with second-degree murder and felony tampering with evidence in the shooting death of Jackson.
