Independence High class of 2025 graduates despite doubt
RIO RANCHO — The Independence High School class of 2025 graduation was a rambunctious occasion, though small in size at the Cleveland High School Auditorium May 19.
Families of the graduates, hooting and hollering, were ecstatic for the students to be graduating, and it was no surprise why they were so excited. Independence High School is a place where students who have life or academic struggles can get back on their feet and gear themselves toward graduating.
For student speaker Faviola Castillo, the only surprise was actually making it to graduation.
“Honestly, I am a little shocked to be here. If you were to tell me four years ago that I would be giving a speech, I would have said you have the wrong student,” she said.
She thanked the teachers at Independence, saying they showed support by giving extra lessons after class or “just simply believing in us.” She added that the 2025 class feels more prepared because of those teachers.
With a sigh of relief, Castillo said, “Congratulations class of 2025; we did it!”
Eight of the graduates were recognized with awards on top of their diplomas. One student got her award with an emotional message from her teacher. Ciara Barba-Castillo, a young parent, proudly carried her baby as she collected her diploma.
“She faced the complex realities of parenting while receiving her education during full-time jobs that demand that every ounce of her energies and love,” teacher Allison Poccia said.
Poccia said that many people might see young parenthood as a setback but Barba-Castillo didn’t.
“I’ve seen your growth. I’ve watched your determination, and I’ve seen you love your child and fight through your future. I couldn’t be more proud of you,” Poccia said.
At the end of the ceremony, as is tradition, a bell was rung marking the graduation of those students. Another tradition was each student was given a rose to give to someone who helped them succeed.
