Rio Rancho Mayor Gregg Hull has been elected to serve as president-elect of the New Mexico Municipal League, an association representing 106 municipalities across New Mexico.
Hull’s election was announced at the NMML’s 67th annual conference held Aug. 13-16 in Clovis.
Hull, who will assume the presidency in one year, said the new role allows him to focus on key issues affecting local governance, taxation, water management and overall quality of life. Hull has had extensive involvement and leadership within the league. He is also currently the chairman of the New Mexico Mayors Caucus, a subset of the Municipal League.
“It's a great honor to be elected as president-elect,” Hull said. “That means that a year from now, I'll assume the presidency of the Municipal League, and it'll be a great opportunity to represent the municipalities of New Mexico in the Legislature and other important issues that are really statewide issues.”
Hull said the league plays an important role in supporting communities during crises, such as the recent fires in Ruidoso and flooding in Las Vegas, New Mexico.
Hull praised the current president, Ruidoso Mayor Lynn Crawford, for exemplary leadership during those challenging events, emphasizing the league’s commitment to assisting municipalities in need.
“The league steps up to help communities in crisis, and the league really pulls together to support those communities and make sure they have the things that they need,” Hull said.
The NMML conference, attended by more than 400 members, provided a platform for dialogue on pressing issues and showcased the league’s solidarity and collaborative spirit. Hull’s election to the president-elect position shows his dedication to enhancing municipal services and governance in New Mexico.
“I think it has everything to do with the fact that I've been very involved in the Municipal League for many years, not only working to make Rio Rancho a better community, but other communities, and helping them along,” Hull said. “As chair of the Mayors Caucus, I've convened various different meetings where we get together as mayors and talk about the things that affect our communities.”
Hull credited his successful, unopposed candidacy to his active role within the league and his leadership during the pandemic.
“We found this highly valuable during the pandemic, when we all got together as mayors over Zoom and we were really talking about what we were going to do as communities. If every one of our retail facilities was shut down, how are we going to continue to provide government services under the public health order? How are we going to help our citizens get through this very tumultuous time?” Hull said. “That particular caucus served as a really great forum to talk about those issues and collaborate on solutions that would really take not only Rio Rancho, but all other communities, forward through in the state of New Mexico. Playing that role, I think that that really established a relationship between myself and the other members of the league, and I think that the honor that they bestowed upon me as being president-elect stems from that.”
