Elderly squatter removed from residence

John Vettraino, about 71, of Rio Rancho, was arrested Sept. 21 for breaking and entering on the 1600 block of Skyview Circle.

Officers responded to the property for a burglary after a report of plywood being ripped down off the back window. The caller could also hear a television or radio playing. The caller also said an eviction notice had been served to the residence approximately 2 1/2 weeks ago.

Officers established a perimeter around the house and gave multiple commands to the possible individuals inside the residence. After approximately an hour, they moved to the back window where the plywood had been tampered with. They made contact with Vettraino, who was given additional commands to exit the residence. He complied with commands and was taken into custody for breaking and entering.

Vettraino, if convicted, will face 1 1/2 years in prison and a $5,000 fine.
