RIO RANCHO – Dr. Sue Cleveland was all smiles at a banquet held in her honor on Friday, as the longtime RRPS superintendent was presented with the Administrator of the Year Award by the New Mexico Association of Student Councils (NMASC).

There are four schools in the Rio Rancho Public Schools District that are members of the NMASC, and all four nominated Cleveland for this year’s award.

“Dr. V. Sue Cleveland has been an exceptional leader and an incredible inspiration to our student councils,” said delegates from Eagle Ridge Middle School.

Mountain View Middle School students echoed the sentiment, saying, “Dr. Cleveland has always been a strong advocate for student engagement, emphasizing the importance of giving students the opportunity to lead, collaborate, and shape their school experience.”

The NMASC was established in 1950, has over 1,700 registered delegates. It was formed by a group of student council leaders in an effort to amplify student voices, a mission and vision Dr. Cleveland shares.

“Her support has been instrumental in providing avenues for students to get involved in meaningful ways,” said the Rio Rancho High School delegation. “A shining example of her dedication is her role in helping RRHS host two State Conferences and two National Conferences. These events have been transformative for students, offering them the chance to connect with peers, exchange ideas, and grow as leaders.”

Dr. Cleveland took the reins of RRPS when the district was first incorporated over 30 years ago. She is the one-and-only superintendent RRPS has ever had. Currently the district is the 5th ranked school district in New Mexico (out of over 120), according to niche.com, an education watchdog and rating website.

This award reflects the efforts Dr. Cleveland has made to put RRPS in the top tier of districts in New Mexico by advocating for student involvement.

“Dr. Cleveland’s unwavering belief in the power of student leadership has created an environment where student councils can thrive, making her a key figure in the success of these initiatives,” said the Cleveland High School delegation. “Her legacy as an advocate for student voice continues to inspire and motivate future generations of student leaders in the district.”
