County honors tribal liaison for 25 years of service
Sandoval County Commissioners join Peter Madalena and his family to celebrate 25 years as an employee at the county.
BERNALILLO — Sandoval County recognized a long-time advocate employee of 25 years during the June 11 commission meeting.
Peter Madalena, the Towa tribal liaison for the county, provides services to the pueblos of Jemez and Sandia in Sandoval County by offering translation services in the Towa language.
Chair Mike Meek presented Madalena with a plaque recognizing the quarter-century of his service.
“I’m honored today to be able to acknowledge one of our employees who’s been here for 25 years, serving the citizens of Sandoval County, as well as in the past as lieutenant governor of the village of the Pueblo Jemez,” Meek said in reference to Madalena.
Madalena thanked the commission for their involvement with indigenous life within the county.
“I just want to thank you from the bottom of my heart,” he said.
He added that the county is unique in that there are 12 tribes and nations in its area that are celebrated for their diverse ethnic backgrounds.
Meek thanked him again before reading a proclamation, saying Madalena is a true public servant.
“We’re so proud that you’re with us for 25 years, and hopefully we get another 10 or so,” Meek said.
