Commission recognizes women's history month

BERNALILLO — Sandoval County Commission recognized Women’s History Month at its March 12 meeting.

Commissioner Katherine Bruch presented the proclamation.

“In recognition of Women’s History Month, whereas Women’s History Month is a celebration of women’s contributions to history, culture and society and has been observed annually in the month of March in the United States since 1987 and grew out of a weeklong celebration in 1978,” she read aloud. “And whereas American women of every race, class, class and ethnic background and made historic contributions to the growth and strength of the strength of our nation and countless recorded and unrecorded ways. And whereas American women have played and continue to play critical economic, cultural and social roles in every sphere of the life of the nation.”

The proclamation added that American women have served the country courageously in the military and were particularly important in the establishment of early charitable, philanthropic and cultural institutions in the nation.

“The women of Sandoval County government play a vital role in shaping our local government as women represent 45% of our staff, 60% of our elected officials and more than a third of our management team. These women serve every department with professionalism, commitment, paving the way for future generations, and women are making history every day and will continue to do so in ways that would change our county and our country or the better,” she said.

Bruch gathered the women staff for a photo after the proclamation was read.
