Cielo Azul balloons fail to fly for Albuquerque Aloft
To the disappointment of Cielo Azul students, their families and staff, the hot air balloons did not take off for the Oct. 4 Albuquerque Aloft event in Rio Rancho.
Despite the chilly and somewhat windy morning air, CAE's field was full of people both children and adults. As the two balloon crews parked, excitement arose. Balloonists got the kids to count down for them to start up the hot flame of the gondola, and they all cheered loudly when it ignited. As the balloons started to inflate, the buzz of excitement only increased. However, as the sun came up over the east side of the school, the balloons only deflated again. The families were visibly disheartened.
"It was a disappointment as the balloons did not inflate or launch due to winds. Not surprised though; it happens often with our location," school librarian Lindsey Mahana said.
CAE sits at a high elevation in Northern Meadows with very little to block the wind.
Mahana, who has worked at CAE for 17 years, has never missed an Albuquerque Aloft.
"It brings balloons directly to the community; not every family can make it out to Fiesta," she said.
She added the free event gives kids an opportunity to see balloons in person.
"Everyone is relaxed and just enjoying the time together. The kids are running around; there's coffee for the parents. It's just a good time on a Friday morning," she said.
Rio the police dog from Rio Rancho Police Department also made an appearance for the early morning display.
