CHS musical headlines March fine arts

RIO RANCHO — March is coming right up, which means spring fine arts activities are kicking off.

It’s a massive month for the students in RRPS fine arts programs. From the massive New Mexico Music Educators Association (NMMEA) Music Festival to the premier of Cleveland High School’s spring musical, to the elementary and middle school art shows, there is something big happening every week.

One of the month’s highlights is the Storm’s production of “Pippin,” which will have six showings, March 6-8 and March 13-15.

“Pippin” is a fourth-wall-breaking musical built around the premise of a performance troupe, led by the Leading Player, who tells the story of Pippin, a young prince searching for meaning and significance.

Originally created specifically for student theater troupes, “Pippin” has undergone numerous rewrites and changes over the decades since it was first produced in 1972 at Carnegie Mellon University. The play has come back into fashion in recent years after a Broadway production of it in 2013 won numerous Tony Awards.

Another major highlight is the NMMEA District Music Festival taking place March 1 at Cleveland High School. After months of All-State performances and competitions, the musicians will finally be able to just get together and show off a little bit.
