The older man who killed a woman he was caring for while she was on in-home hospice care last year is now pleading guilty to voluntary manslaughter.

Henry Cardana, 86, of Rio Rancho, was arrested in April 2023 for the willful and deliberate murder of Juneanne Fannell at a residence at the corner of Western Hills Drive and Utah Meadow Road.

Emergency services were called to the residence several times that day before the final call that Fannell had been shot dead. Those previous calls were from Cardana, saying he needed help and couldn't take care of Fannell any longer and from Fannell herself saying she feared for her life. Adult services was also called many times prior to that day.

Cardana took a plea deal Aug. 23 to a voluntary manslaughter charge, which was uncontested by the state.

This plea comes after Cardana motioned for settlement earlier this year.

Cardana could face up to six years in prison on the voluntary manslaughter charge.
