ALBUQUERQUE — Last week, the girls hit the West Mesa Aquatic Center (WMAC) for their portion of the APS Metro Swimming & Diving Championship. This week, it was the boys’ turn to hit the pool.

La Cueva took the top trophy decisively, putting up 515 points, a full 214 more than the second-place Eldorado Eagles (299). The Bears grabbed eight gold medals, four silvers and one bronze in their pursuit of the title.

Sixteen teams collided at the WMAC on Jan. 17-18, and the Rio Rancho Public Schools teams represented the City of Vision well.

RRHS took fourth place after a strong effort from the entire team grabbed the Rams 244 points. Rio Rancho High School took six total medals: Jacob Rice and Caleb Solis both earned two bronze medals each. Xavier King and Noah Bratvold also nabbed bronze medals for the Rams squad.

Cleveland finished just behind the Rams in fifth place. Storm star Guha Hari was the top scorer (for either team) with 32 total points (and a bronze medal in the 50-meter freestyle to boot).

Next week, both squads head back to the WMAC for APS Meet #7, and they’ll have a nice boost of confidence when they do.
