Annual iris show returns to French roots
RIO RANCHO — Many have used the phrase “Fleur de Lis” in centuries past. Literally, it means “flower of the iris” or “lily flower” in French. The symbol, inspired by the famous European Iris flower, came to represent French monarchy in 12th century Europe when a French king alleged that the Virgin Mary gave him a golden lily after his baptism, though there are many theories about the monarchial origin of the symbol.
Now, the symbol is representative of the Enchanted Vista Iris Society for its 12th annual iris show taking place from 1-4 p.m. May 3 at the Sabana Grande Recreation Center.
Now in its third year after a hiatus during the pandemic, the iris show will carry the theme of “A Fleur de Lis of Dreams” this year.
The society invites people to enter their flowers from 7-10:30 a.m. that day. Judging will take place from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. before the public can join and buy a flower that suits their fancy.
There are 300 possible irises that could show up in the show, as it is a large genus compared to other flower types.
The event is free to the public.
