Animal Resource Center hosts adoption sale
Kimberly Ashcrant, a kennel team member, holds Chunky, a cat who has been with the Rio Rancho Animal Resource Center since May 2, 2024.
In honor of the summer holidays, the Rio Rancho Animal Resource Center is encouraging pet adoptions by offering half off adoption fees.
"Let's see of we can get out shelter emptied!" the center's Facebook post read.
"The original shelter was expanded in 2007. It gave us the ability to hold 59 dogs and approximately 40 cats. And so, as you can see, we're not a large shelter compared to the city of Albuquerque or the county in Bernalillo. So we fill up quite rapidly, and we stay at capacity. That's why we run sales and do adoption events," said Cheryll Johns, facility manager of the Rio Rancho Animal Resource Center.
Currently, the center is adopting out 45-50% of the animals that come in with 35-40% of the animals reclaimed by their owners. The remaining animals are sent to other rescue groups, or, in cases that the animal has a condition that the center cannot treat medically, they are euthanized.
However, there is no deadline for how long an animal stays with the center.
"We do not have specific timelines. There is no deadline placed on an animal. If they are highly adoptable and we know it will move, it will stay in our care and custody and with advertisements, special event, adoptions," Johns said.
In the month of June, the center took in 158 animals and saw an influx of animals following the recent rainstorms.
Once an animal is adopted, they are spayed and neutered, microchipped and receive a rabies vaccine and a city license tag.
Outside of the sales, the center hosts many events for adoptions. Johns says they do all the city events, including events at libraries, coffee shops and parks.
As of July 8, the center has adopted out 19 animals since the start of the sale on June 28.
“Puppies and kittens move quickly regardless of the sales,” Johns said.
For the first six months of 2024, the center conducted 339 live exits, or adoptions and 260 reclaims. The year prior, in 2023, there were 813 live exits and 584 reclaims by owners.
The sale ends July 15 and may be extended.
