PHOTOS: Park in the Park draws in hundreds despite unpredictable weather
Rain, hail and sunny patches dominated Park in the Park April 27, but that didn't stop hundreds of people and cars from attending the event.
A variety of classics, hot rods and pure history pieces parked in Campus Park by City Hall that day.
One history piece that many would recognize instantly was a white Pontiac Trans Am Firebird owned by Callahan Moots.
"I have lived in Rio Rancho my whole life, and I bought the car from Rio Rancho. Originally some guy lived in Rio Rancho since 1978 and he parked it in about 1990," he said.
Moots bought the car in 2014, almost 35 years after the car had been sitting and collecting dust. Unfortunately, most of the engine bay and the rest of the car didn't survive the years as well as Moots had hoped. Moots got the car from a middle-of-no-where home located on Southern Boulevard past Baltic Avenue.
"Where the sun was shining on this car for so long, it turned it just bleached it all out to tan," he said.
He also said the engine looked like "adobe" because it had been sitting for so long.
However, Moots and his brother restored the engine bay and got the car running, but there is still work to be done.
Moots also has the original build sheet and window sticker for the car, which is a rare occurrence in classic car world.
A regular at car events in Rio Rancho, Michael Gonzales, was also attending the show with his Cafe Bella-marked truck but said he left when it started hailing on him.
In the sea of classic Mustangs, Chevys and trucks, only a few cars stood out. "Back to the Future" fans saw the return of the DeLorean, a Citroen only heard about in Europe and car mythology made an appearance and the familiar generation X Saab was a light-hearted addition to the crowd of American Muscle.
While the day was quite unpredictable weather wise, the Best of Show Winner was LT Hettick from Rio Rancho with his 1972 Chevelle SS.
"It was a great day despite the weather on Saturday, April 27 for the 22nd Annual Park 'n the Park Car Show, with over 200 cars in attendance, the Best of Show Winner is...LT Hettick from Rio Rancho," Rio Rancho Parks and Recreation said in a post.
Perhaps next year's Park in the Park weather will be more desirable than this year's.
