The Wild Hearts Gallery in Placitas has its next art collection on display this month.

Artist Marcia Rackstraw's collection, "Reflection," is on display through Sept. 29.
“A gift of four Japanese tapestries inspired an interest in organization of space and how we respond to it. The intention is meditative; encouragement to pause and reflect on the relationship of the spaces and objects and what their story may tell. I, as well, pause to allow the painting to evolve in a way that tells me where it is headed, what new elements will complete the story. Often those elements come from my past works — the tropical foliage, the koi, the draped fabrics and, in the most recent paintings, the figure has reappeared after an absence of many years," Rackstraw said.

Rackstraw has maintained an art studio in Placitas since 1985, working in charcoal and oil paint with experience in printmaking in the form of linocuts. Her first visit to Placitas was in 1980 and, within hours of arriving, she knew this was where she wanted to live and work. Relocating six months later, she continued her education at the University of New Mexico, earning a BFA in 1983 and an M.A. in 1985. She began a career as an advertising designer for a small publishing company in Albuquerque, eventually becoming art director, the job from which she retired in 2014.

The artist’s reception will be celebrated with fellowship and refreshments from 1-3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 14.
