1. The city of Rio Rancho is hosting a Día de los Perros Pet Festival and Adopt-a-Thon from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday in Cabezon Park.

The public is invited to bring their dog or dogs out for a pet parade and costume contest. Halloween bags of goodies will be giving to first-, second- and third-place winners.

Additionally, a variety of rescue groups and shelters will be on hand in an effort to find “furever” homes for their animals. There will also be food trucks and pet-related vendors out at the event.

2. The New Mexico Runners arena soccer team will be holding open tryouts for the 2024-25 season Saturday and Sunday. This is the Rio-Rancho-based squad’s sixth season in the Major Arena Soccer League (MASL), an incorporated as a 5016 not for profit corporation formed to promote the business and sport of indoor soccer.

The NM Runners play at the Rio Rancho Events Center and their season typically runs from December through March. There are 12 teams in MASL, and the Runners play in the Midwest Division, along with the Wichita Wings, Amarillo Bombers and Kansas Bandits.

This season, the team is holding open tryouts in the hopes of improving on last season’s 1-12 record. The Runners finished fourth in the Midwest in the 2023-24 season.

According to the news release, the tryout is expected to last roughly two hours, and some athletes may be asked to return at a later date for further evaluation.

The tryout fee is $60 at the door or $50 for the “Early Bird Special.” Athletes receive T-shirts regardless of the outcome, and the tryouts are open to anyone over 18 years of age. Check-in begins at 11 a.m. Nov. 2.

3. The Back Our Veterans Pool Tournament begins at 10 a.m. Saturday at Slate Street Billiards Bar and Grill. There is a $30 per person entry fee with proceeds going to grant funding for veteran-owned businesses.

Hosted by the Rio Rancho Regional Chamber of Commerce Veterans Business Support Coalition, the tournament is 9 Ball Scotch Doubles with cash prizes available. Check-in begins at 9 a.m.

4. The Rio Rancho Chamber of Commerce will also play host to the Fall Visionary Arts & Crafts Show from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday. A variety of handcrafted items from juried artisans and creators will be available to help you get a jump on holiday shopping — whether for yourself or others.

5. The Corrales Historical Society will be hosting a new event — La Música de Corrales Fiesta: Then and Now — Saturday and Sunday at the Historic Old San Ysidro Church and the new San Ysidro Church Parish Hall.

The fiesta will feature a program of individual performances by individuals and groups, including centuries-old music of New Mexico that has shaped the culture.

According to CHS, Saturday will feature traditional music in Spanish and English from 200 years ago to today such as alabados, corridos, Ladino (Spanish Sephardic), flamenco, folkloric storytelling and more. There will be a community dance at the San Ysidro Parish Hall at 6 p.m.

Sunday will feature guest musicians from the region, joining Corrales musicians for presentations of jazz, fold, bluegrass and country. An open jazz session will close the show.

There will also be a display of vintage instruments, including the hurdy gurdy and glass armonica throughout the weekend.
