What's up this weekend? A look at what's going on around Sandoval County Jan. 17-20
1. The African Children’s Choir is celebrating 40 years with a couple of performances in Rio Rancho: 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 17, at the Paragon Church, 103 Rio Rancho Drive SE, and 7 p.m. Monday, Jan. 20, at Anchor Point Community Church, 6751 Pasilla Road NW.
The choir will deliver performances of popular children’s tunes, traditional spiritual songs and vibrant African cultural pieces. The African Children’s Choir is made up of children ages 8-11.
No tickets are required, though donations are appreciated. For more information, visit africanchildrenschoir.com.
2. It’s once again time for the Ranger Read and Learn at the Martha Liebert Public Library in Bernalillo from 10-11 a.m. Saturday. Join the staff of the Coronado and Jemez Historic Sites for a story time and hands-on activity. This session, children can listen to the book “Drop! An Adventure through the Water Cycle,” by Emily Kate Moonabout, to learn about how people use water and to explore the water cycle. Participants will make a water-based craft after listening to the story.
3. Enjoy an outdoor movie at THE BLOCK with a screening of “Despicable Me 4” at 6 p.m. Saturday. Bundle up, though, because temperatures could dip. Bring blankets and chairs, but no outside food or drink. Make it an event and hit the ice rink before it closes down at the end of the month. Thirty minutes for $5, and skates are provided.
4. It’s a three-day weekend for many. Celebrate the observation of Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
The Southern Christian Leadership Conference of New Mexico will host its 15th annual luncheon Jan. 20 at St. Thomas Aquinas in Rio Rancho to honor Dr. Martin Luther King Junior.
The luncheon, slated for 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., is ticketed. For more information, visit sclc.org.
