RIO RANCHO — Heartstrings Theatre Company is hosting a scholarship fundraising event from 6-8 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 28, ant the McDermott Athletic Center, 801 Loma Colorado Blvd.
The MAC has donated two hours of ice time for the event, where attendees can enjoy and evening of ice skating for $10 with proceeds going to fund scholarships for the theater company, including a new one that will be established in memory of Betty Ann McDermott, which will be awarded annually to help a child participate in Heartstrings' programs regardless of financial circumstances.
The evening will also include a costume contest, were participants are invited to dress as their favorite "Frozen" character, and hot chocolate and treats will be available for purchase.
“This event showcases the incredible potential of collaboration between sports and the arts,” said Kim Rothwell, board president of Heartstrings. “By bringing these two worlds together, we create opportunities that entertain, empower and uplift the children in our community. We are deeply grateful to The MAC for their generosity and commitment to our mission.”
Terrence McDermott, representing The MAC, commented on the tribute to his mother: “My mother was always passionate about helping children, and I’m honored to continue her legacy through our partnership with Heartstrings Theatre Company. Knowing that her memory will live on through a scholarship that provides opportunities for kids to thrive means the world to me.”
Heartstrings has also announced a new partner, the African American Performing Arts Center in an effort to increase diversity within the program, including in the upcoming production of "Frozen Jr.," to be held at AAPAC.
“At AAPAC, we believe in the power of the arts to bring communities together and create meaningful change," said Newton Robinson, AAPAC executive director. "Partnering with Heartstrings Theatre Company aligns with our mission to uplift and provide opportunities for underrepresented groups. We're excited to collaborate and make theatre accessible to all children, ensuring they have a space to express themselves and grow.”
“As a nonprofit, finding affordable space is one of our biggest challenges. We are so grateful for our collaboration with The MAC and AAPAC. Their support not only helps us continue our work but also makes it possible for more children to experience the magic of theatre,” said Somer Sloan Corey, Heartstrings' artistic director.
Tickets for the scholarship fundraising event are available now for $10 and can be purchased online before the event at Heartstrings Theatre Company's website or at the door.
