Mini pig is 2025's Corrales pet mayor; runners-up fill in other seats
2025’s Pet Mayor of the village of Corrales is Apple the miniature pig, who dressed as Yoda from “Star Wars” for the pet parade Sept. 28. Her owner Teale Adelmann was grinning ear to ear at the win.
CORRALES — This year’s Corrales pet mayor squealed “Victory!” at the announcement of the winners Sept. 28 at Corrales Elementary School.
Apple, a miniature pig, and her publicist (owner) looked forward to spreading awareness about the misunderstood pets, good nutrition and education.
“We’re super excited! It’s been four months of work. So, it’s worth it,” said Teale Adelmann, Apple’s owner.
Apple plans to use her mayoral power to encourage community gardens in the village “because she is an advocate for access to fruits and vegetables for everybody, and she is enthusiastic about the environment,” Adelmann said.
The mini pig also believes in “naps for everyone” and good cognitive function.
But Apple was also supportive of her runners-up, who will be sitting along side her in pet municipal seats.
“Well, I think what she’s super excited about is that the passion that everyone has and how much work everyone has put into it. It was just a tight race, I’m sure, and she’s excited to be working with all her candidates,” Adelmann said.
The village’s “very human” mayor, James Fahey, swore Apple in as pet mayor and walked with the pets in the parade, which commenced shortly after the ceremony. With Apple, dressed as Yoda to fit this year’s science fiction costume theme, leading a subdued version of a stampede took over Corrales Road.
The parade also saw numerous aliens and space creatures with a few costumes standing out. The winner of the costume contest came decked out in “How to Train Your Dragon” theme. Sitting atop a horse dressed as Toothless, a dragon from the movie, the owner was in full Viking attire.
A crowd favorite was an alien dog being escorted by its owner dressed as a character from “Men in Black.” He wiped a few people’s memories with his handy deneuralyzer.
According to the parade and mayoral race co-organizer Cheryl Kemnitz, the event was a huge success. Dollar donations between candidates were very close, so it was a tight race, she said.
“The Kiwanis Club of Corrales closed the voting polls for the pet mayor election at 5 p.m. the night before the parade. Apple the mini pig won the election to become this year’s Corrales pet mayor. Apple ran a tight campaign neck-and-neck with Riley the dog, who was named the new director of Barks and Recreation. Only $31 separated Apple and Riley, with mini donkey Clover a close third,” Kemnitz said.
She added that, due to the efforts of the candidates and generous support of the community, the election raised $7,000, surpassing the $5,000 goal.
“This event is a great way to support animal services, and we enjoy the opportunity to meet so many great people in the process. The Kiwanis Club looks forward to next year’s election, for which candidates will be accepted starting in June of 2026,” Kemnitz said.
