Danny Dines: Hannah & Nate's
CORRALES — As the kids would say, “it’s been a minute.”
Nonetheless, I felt it was time to try a hometown favorite.
In fact, I have received more than 20 submissions over the past couple of years to try Hannah & Nate’s Market Cafe.
My mom loves Hannah & Nate’s and raves about it. I will say that I am skeptical of her opinions since she orders her steaks well done ... at some point it’s just beef jerky, Mom! I digress.
However, make no mistake, Hannah & Nate’s is well worth the trip: friendly service, cool aesthetic and delicious food.
I walked through the doors and immediately felt the breeze of some good energy. An employee even told me that my shirt was “pretty cool,” which is funny because I wore the same shirt around my ex-girlfriend and the only thing she said was, “Stop dancing. You’re ruining Fuddruckers for everybody.”
I took a seat near a cool fireplace, and through the power of reading, I found out the restaurant’s founders, Phil and Beth Salazar, named the restaurant after their two children: Hannah and Nate. Pretty cool. If I ever own a restaurant, I hope to name it after my two children: Gandalf and Peyton Manning.
To be clear, I don’t have any kids yet, but I have already decided on some great, gender-neutral names. Other names I will consider: Quasimodo, Boromir, Bartholomew and Kevin.
Ordering was a tough decision. I considered ordering the New Mexico “Heavenly” hash, the New Mexico breakfast bagel and the sloppy “Jose.” They also had a lunch menu, and I was eying the Rio Grande turkey sandwich and a Bosque grilled cheese.
In the end, I decided to order their signature breakfast enchiladas and sour dough French toast.
The breakfast enchiladas came with three stacked enchiladas stuffed with cheddar cheese and onion, topped with red or green chile (I ordered Christmas), two eggs and topped with more cheese. It is also served with a side of hash browns and tortilla.
It was time to dig in. It was cheesy, fresh, tasty and very filling. If New Mexico had a flavor, it was this dish. I especially loved the taste and flair of both types of chile.
Next, came the sourdough French toast. I got four slices topped with powdered sugar. It was sweet, golde, and custardy on the inside and had a crispy exterior. The sourdough bread gave it a little bit of tanginess, and this treat was the perfect start to the morning.
I ate all of the food in 12 minutes and 36 seconds. However, it wasn’t time to throw in the towel.
The dessert menu looked phenomenal, and I ordered chocolate mousse pie, which was a house-made chocolate mousse piled high in crust, topped with an espresso chocolate sauce and whipped topping.
I also considered their warmed chocolate chunk brownie and their cranberry bread pudding.
There was a slight problem, though: I was full. So I gave my dessert to a lady and a young boy, and they told me that it was, “Amazing!”
If you ever find yourself in Corrales, stop by Hannah & Nate’s. They also have another location in Albuquerque in Riverside Plaza off of Montano.
