Transitions in Senior Care, a referral service that helps senior citizens find living spaces, has established itself in Rio Rancho, and the owner celebrated with a ribbon cutting May 21.

The business is owned by Rio Rancho residents Penny and Robb Krautbauer.

Penny has been in this kind of care for most of her life and while she took a break from it, it was ultimately her passion. She has been in senior care for 20 years with senior living, assisted living, memory and home care.

"It's just what I have always wanted to do," she said.

She added that the goal is to help families solve one of their biggest challenges in the journey to senior care by offering an easier, less stressful way to find a community that is right for them.

"The last thing seniors and their families need is added stress at a time like this. As a referral agent in Rio Rancho and surrounding communities, we listen to their needs with compassion and sincerity. This is a difficult time for the families, and not a lot of us have ever been prepared for this. Helping them find the community that fits their needs, in the right location with the budget they can afford is our passion in life," she said.

Penny and Robb also know that one of the biggest challenges that families face is dealing with all the "forever stuff in their loved one's home."

Another factor is cost.

"One of the biggest challenges of the seniors is these facilities aren't inexpensive," she said.

They can also buy the house in an “as-is" condition. Robb, who is in real estate, says he helps families get the equity that they need to pay for care so they can get the help they deserve.

Mayor Gregg Hull was grateful to have another service for seniors and said Rio Rancho has a significant senior population that could benefit.

Sandoval County Commissioner Dave Heil jokingly said, "I may be a senior one day."

Rio Rancho Regional Chamber of Commerce President Jerry Schalow said the investment is appreciated and that their business will help a large demographic in Rio Rancho.
