Small Business Saturday keeps money in RR
RRRCC was packed Nov. 30 with vendors and buyers for their Small Business Saturday event.
RIO RANCHO — Black Friday has been a holiday shopping tradition for decades, but a newer tradition focusing on local businesses has taken hold in recent years.
In celebration of Small Business Saturday Nov. 30, the Rio Rancho Regional Chamber of Commerce provided a space for local small businesses to sell their wares as the focus shifts from turkey to preparing for the winter holidays.
Chamber President Jerry Schalow says it’s a good way to start holiday celebrations and keep money in Rio Rancho.
“We have a great amount of vendors out here today. It’s a great event,” he said.
He added that for every dollar spent, 90 cents remains in the community.
“And then, on top of that, the governor has made a proclamation that today is tax-free day for all of these vendors. So, it creates a great opportunity for everyone to get something unique rather than getting something from a big-box that is what everybody else is going to get. You get a unique piece of New Mexico right here today,” he said.
One vendor was selling embroidered wine cozies designed like kitchen aprons.
“I’m here because I really enjoy this and I enjoy talking to people, and this has been a really fun venue, so far,” ColorShot Embroidery owner Anne Hallman said.
She had quite a few people stop at her booth. She had several aprons on display, some with heartfelt messages and some with humorous quips. Her favorite, though, is a flamingo apron with feathers.
Other vendors had crafty items for sale ranging from pottery to carved wood and more.
Rio Refills, a sustainable and reusable-based product business, also made an appearance but was parked outside.
“It’s been steady, but I think people are waiting to see Santa,” owner Jamie Sandoval said.
She was grateful to be outside as the indoor market was a little crowded.
Guests also heard from the youth chorus from Creative Crossroads. They sang Christmas carols. There was also a visit from Santa, who was taking pictures with those visiting the event.
