Mulas opens for business in Corrales

Though open for a couple of weeks at lunchtime, Mulas officially opened May 3 and celebrated with a ribbon cutting at the Corrales location.

"This is a really big day. It's not just Mulas; it's the frontier market," Corrales MainStreet Executive Director Angela Gutierrez said before the ribbon was cut.

Owners Gabriel and Elizabeth Holguin also own Debajo in Albuquerque. Mulas earned its name because Corrales has a significant equine population. Mules, horses and donkeys are fairly common in Corrales along with other members of the animal kingdom.

Corrales Mayor Jim Fahey is very pleased with its opening, too. "We're right next door," he added. He admitted he was relieved the noise from the building's redesign was over, though.

Gabriel said he and his wife are excited. "I'm very thankful that the community has embraced the Mulas restaurant," he added.

Inside the restaurant, a total makeover took place. Before it became Mulas, the building was home to Corrales Bistro and Brewery.

Elizabeth is proud of the design changes in the bathrooms and had the idea to put historical Corrales photos on their walls.

As part of the celebration, Esther the mule joined in the fun for people to get photos with.

The patio is still very much an active part of the restaurant.

Menu wise, Mulas serves mostly tamales, enchiladas, burritos, tacos and more authentic New Mexican foods that born-and-raised "505ers" know and love. It also serves pizzas and sandwiches. There is also a selection of desserts like Buñuelos, a Mexican twist on fry bread and Spanish flan.
