RIO RANCHO — What is that thing on the floor by the door and why is its tail wagging? Can’t be a rug. Oh wait, it’s the shaggy dog that needs a haircut.

That dog won’t have to wait any longer for that well-deserved cleanup because, as of Oct. 24, Furry Land Mobile Pet Groomers have Rio Rancho dog owners’ backs, or rather their dog’s back.

Furry Land operates from about 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily and offers grooming for dogs and cats. Those wanting to schedule an appointment can do so online, and the groomer will come to the customer. There are a variety of services besides an all-around grooming including bathing, haircuts, nail trimming and more. Prices are determined based on a few factors like breed of the animal, weight of the animal and condition of their coat.

“We have three vans, and we’re thinking about our fourth, but nothing solid yet. We also have three dogs. So it’s been very convenient for us,” Furry Land owner Christine Esterly said.

She says she and her husband Robert hated taking the dogs to a grooming shop because their white fur would get all over their cars that have black interiors.

“It’s just a big fat mess every time they get in the car, and they’re getting older. The dogs are getting harder to transport because they’ve got some hip injuries and stuff, so we realized there was quite a need for mobile pet grooming,” she added.

Mayor Gregg Hull was glad the service will be in Rio Rancho, saying he could use it for his own dogs.

“I’ll tell you what, mobile dog grooming is really becoming the big thing right now,” he said.

Rio Rancho Regional Chamber of Commerce President Jerry Schalow agreed with that sentiment.

“A grooming service that comes to your door is really great. It eliminates that issue of scheduling the time, taking time off from work, figuring out how you’re going to do this and do that,” Schalow said.
