RIO RANCHO — The Mesa Club, a space for people to recover and get sober, celebrated its new look Sept. 29.

With the help of donations from County Commissioners Jay Block and Dave Heil, Mesa Club was able to put in new floors, chair rails, new lights, a new kitchen and repaint the entire meeting space. However, additional improvements are still needed.

“Each of them gave the club $5,000,” board president Sean Roberts said.

Block said that commission would be donating an additional $1,800. That additional money will go toward new lockers for the groups that meet at the Mesa Club.

“This place has been near and dear to my heart — Desert Mountain Healing and the Mesa Club — because I was exposed to it from Gary and Sean. Sean really put a lot of pressure on me,” Block said. “It’s very important to me because I came to a meeting here about a month or so ago, which was fantastic. Addiction and substance abuse ... it hits every single family, and it hit mine multiple times.”

He went on to say that New Mexico has many problems with fentanyl and other substances.

“We’re worse than any other state in the country,” he said.

Block blamed the open border for fentanyl coming through and “destroying our families.”

“Fentanyl doesn’t care what race you are, how old you are, how young you are, how much you make or the neighborhood you live in. It’s destroying families,” he said.

Roberts thanked everyone and reminded them of the upcoming Soberfest.

“Those of us who are already here are still willing to stay here and help the next person who is struggling behind us,” he said.
