RIO RANCHO — Like most in the education field, Rio Rancho Public Schools teachers Vanessa Hernandez and Laura Jarrett have a lot on their plate. Well, a lot on their charcuterie boards.

“Being Hispanic women, trying to make a footprint in our community,” Jarrett said, “it feels like it is much needed in Rio Rancho.”

Besides working with kindergarteners and being full-time moms, Hernandez and Jarrett are also the owners of Golden Brie Charcuterie.

“For me, I have always done charcuterie for my family. For holidays, birthdays, any gatherings, I have always done charcuterie, and I have also done charcuterie boards for staff here at school,” Jarrett said. “Every single time I make one, everyone says, ‘Oh, you should do this as a business; you should start selling this.’”

At the end of the summer, Hernandez and Jarrett officially launched their business.

“We wanted to be entrepreneurs, we wanted to own our own business, we both had a love for charcuteries, so it kind of just came together,” Jarrett said.

The name of the business originates from the pairing of honey with brie cheese, hence “golden brie.”

Their menu consists of charcuterie boards (small, medium and large), charcuterie cups, gift boxes and spreads.

Golden Brie Charcuterie serves its charcuterie boards with various meats, cheeses, crackers or bread, fruit, spreads, nuts, pickles, chocolates and so much more.

“That is the beautiful part of charcuterie is you can taste things, you can sample things and discover a new love,” Jarrett said.

Charcuterie boards do present an interesting challenge to the maker: It must be delicious, and it must be visually appetizing.

“That’s part of it. I think people are attracted to the way that it looks,” Hernandez said. “There are times that we look at each other, we hug each other and say, ‘Laura! It’s so beautiful.’”

Next for the Golden Brie Charcuterie is expanding toward food fairs and festivals.

But for now, business has been going since it is the holiday season.

“It’s the holidays; people love this stuff as appetizers while they are cooking, friendsgivings. We had a lot of orders for Thanksgiving,” Hernandez said.
