A new housing unit broke ground last week in Cuba.

Presbyterian Medical Services — Cuba Health Center — held a groundbreaking ceremony May 29 for workforce housing units in Cuba. Four modern apartment homes are being built next to the health center on PMS-owned land to help address the lack of housing for health care providers.

"Securing housing in the rural village of Cuba is extremely challenging and makes recruiting and retaining health care providers very difficult," states a release from PMS. "The opportunity to have on-site housing units will aid in the provision of high-quality health care to residents in an area of limited access."

The project received $1.6 million from the Department of Housing and Urban Development — Economic Development Initiative through U.S. Rep. Teresa Leger Fernandez, who was the guest of honor at last week's event.

Also in attendance were Sandoval County Commissioner Joshua Jones, Mayor Denny Herrera, and Presbyterian Medical services President/CEO Steve Hansen.
