CrossFit Thunderhawks, a physician-owned functional fitness gym since 2016, celebrated its recent expansion with a ribbon-cutting ceremony March 21.

CrossFit Thunderhawks, located at 6080 Zenith Court, Suite 101/102, offers a mobility clinic, Olympic lifting, weight lifting and CrossFit classes for adults. After the expansion, CF Thunderhawks also now offers CrossFit classes for kids (ages 6-9) and pre-teens.

“What makes us unique is that we started this as a kids, teens and preteens-only box,” owner Javier Hernandez said. “So we’re kind of flying by the seat of our pants. We kind of had to learn on the fly. We’re physicians; we’e not business people. So we’ve learned a lot, and we keep learning that.”

The ceremony was attended by family, friends, fitness enthusiasts and local leaders, including Mayor Gregg Hull, Sandoval County Commissioner Michael Meek and Rio Rancho Regional Chamber of Commerce President/CEO Jerry Schalow.

“I just want to say how wonderful it is to come and celebrate an expansion. I mean, it’s awesome to celebrate a new business, but when you talk about an expansion, that shows that you’re being successful, you’re doing things right,” Hull said. “You’re serving the community. People are excited about what you have to offer and your commitment.”

That commitment paid off for Hernandez and his wife/co-owner Anti Nelly Soto-Hernandez with the expansion of the new gym in the suite directly next to the original.

“Eventually, we outgrew the place we were at and we came over here to the other side. We kept growing and growing, and this is what happened in March,” Hernandez said. “This area is just for kids and preteens. So we have kids and preteens classes at the same time as the adult classes so the parent can bring and drop them off and go work out. This is, once again, very unique to CrossFit. Not all the places have this. We’re super proud of this.”
