BERNALILLO — In June 2024, the Bernalillo Community Museum (BCM) announced the opening of a new exhibit: the History of Sports in Bernalillo exhibit.

Curated by student employees at the BCM and made up of items donated directly by community members, Bernalillo High School and the Sandoval County Historical Society, the popular exhibit has brought in hundreds of visitors since opening.

“Museum staff have assembled several sports-related exhibits where visitors will be reminded of local accomplishments, learn about community members who worked tirelessly to maintain certain sports programs, and test their athletic ability,” the BCM says on its website. “We hope A History of Sports in Bernalillo will remind visitors that the day-to-day commitments to a common goal, a team, and a community truly make sports special.”

Now may be your last chance to check out this one-of-a-kind exhibit, with the display set to shutter its proverbial doors on March 15.

Bernalillo has a long and accomplished sports history. For example, in 2022, Bernalillo’s Juliana Aragon was named Gatorade New Mexico Girls Basketball Player of the Year. In 2023, Spartans head football coach John Cobos was named All-Metro 3A-5A Coach of the Year. The list goes on and on.

According to its website, the exhibit will include:

• A series of skill challenges to test eye-hand coordination, accuracy and reflexes.

• Local nonprofit organizations utilize sports to create positive community changes.

• A visual tour of the fashion of Bernalillo sports.

• The history of the Coronado Little League, how the program was started, and how it has been able to thrive for the last 50 years.

• A detailed history of the Spartan vs Mustang rivalry and how it ended.

• The current 16 sports teams at Bernalillo High School, the history behind each sport, and some of the accomplishments of local athletes.

• Local individuals who dedicated their lives to participating in and developing local sports and community-based programs.
