BERNALILLO — The Bernalillo High School Soccer team (8-6-1) took care of business at Spartan Stadium Tuesday and sent Valley High School (4-12) home with a loss.

The final: Bernalillo 3 (Vega 2’, Vega 20’, Batres 79’), Valley 1 (Gonzales 61’).

The Spartans separated early with a two-nil lead, both goals courtesy of Bernalillo forward Victor Vega.

”It feels incredible to score,” Vega said. “We played pretty good as a team. We passed the ball with flow and moved it around nicely.”

Vega — a captain on the team — leads the Spartans with 18 goals on the season.

The Vikings were able to turn up the heat a bit and finally got on the scoreboard thanks to sophomore Ruben Gonzales. Gonzales — a forward and captain for the Vikings — scored on a low shot in the 61st minute and pulled his team to a one-score game.

After Gonzales' goal, it was an intense 15 minutes of play as both teams had some great looks and offensive attacks. In that span, Bernalillo midfielder Gael Valle was able to get three shots on goal, and all three shots came from outside of the box.

Bernalillo freshman Andres Batres ended any chances of a comeback with a goal by way of a header. Batres’ 79th-minute goal was the final nail in the coffin for the Vikings and secured the “dub” for the Spartans.

“This game was very, very good for us, but there was a lot of mistakes,” Bernalillo coach Francisco Alvarez said. “Our boys are talented, so I know this won’t be a problem for us going forward.”

This is the Spartans' first district win of the season, and they will look to keep the momentum alive on Oct. 11 against a tough Hope Christian squad (11-2-1). After their game against Hope, the Spartans will be in full district mode. Upcoming district bouts include matches against Del Norte (5-7-2) two times in a row, Albuquerque Academy (11-3-1), and a regular season finale rematch against Valley.

“The next game will be very hard because we are playing for the No. 1 spot in the district bracket, and Hope is great,” Alvarez said.
