Skeletons dance at delayed WD Caroll Dîa de los Muertos event
BERNALILLO — It was a long-anticipated night for the WD Caroll Elementary School families in Bernalillo Nov. 14 as they were celebrating their Dia de los Muertos performances about a week later than originally planned.
The initial date for the performance was the same day that the weather refused to cooperate and dumped a few inches of snow on most people in Bernalillo.
Principal Sarah Armstrong was relieved to have the performance at last.
“Thank you so much to our families for being flexible with our snow day change,” she said.
Armstrong was excited to get the performances started, so her speech was short and sweet.
“It is just beautiful and amazing and I am so happy to be a part of it,” she said.
After some technical difficulties, the pre-schoolers from La Escuelita next door marched proudly out in front of their families. When the music started, they excitedly jumped up and down, making many in the gym laugh.
Next, the kindergarteners showed off their slightly more coordinated routine and wiggled their way through a few songs.
The intricately decorated first graders followed suit with Calaca — or skeleton — costumes on. Part of their routine was on the ground, but it was still interesting to say the least.
Second grade also had a routine that was up and down off the ground but had a few crowd favorite songs to liven up the group.
Lastly, third grade, dressed in traditional Mexican attire, had a grand finale for the elementary school’s books.
Everyone left the gym smiling, and another Dia de Los Muertos celebration, though belated, came to a close.
