(#7) Aaron Meserve blasts past the Atrisco Heritage goalkeeper in the Rams 4-2 victory over the Jaguars.
FOOTBALL
This week...
It’s a Bye week for the Rio Rancho Rams (3-2) and the Cleveland Storm (4-1), and a well-earned one at that. The Storm have been on a three-game road trip in which they went 3-0. Rio Rancho played two of their last three at home, but they are dealing with a plethora of injuries. The Rams started five sophomores last week.
For undefeated Bernalillo (4-0, 1-0 in 4A-D1), the real work begins this week. The Spartans have a trip to Española Valley (5-0, 2-0 in 4A-D1) to take on the also-undefeated Sundevils. EVHS wide receiver Victor Parra is tearing the stat sheets apart with a 71.6 yards-per-game average. The Spartans have a sizable defensive front that should make for an interesting matchup.

BOYS SOCCER
This week...
Soccer is entering district play this week and RRHS (6-2) is riding a 6-game winning streak that includes a win over #3 Atrisco Heritage (6-3-1) that saw the Rams jump up the MaxPreps rankings from #7 to #4. (Atrisco dropped to #5).
By the time of print, the Rams will have already played their first game, a home matchup against Farmington (3-7). Their next match is against Volcano Vista. Look for the Meserve brothers (Aaron and Sean), along with striker Bryson Strohecker to start racking up gaudy, video-game numbers over the next few matches.
For the Storm, the road looks similar. CHS faces a struggling Cibola (2-6) team first and then takes a trip north to face Farmington (3-7).
Bernalillo will look to make their presence known in a tightly packed district. The Spartans have three games over the next week.

GIRLS SOCCER
This week...
It’s “get right” week for the girls. Both the Storm (5-5) and the Rams (5-5) have been struggling of late and will look to, that’s correct, “get right” against some well-known opponents as district play kicks off. (Pun intended.)
The Rams will ease into their district season with a home match against the Farmington Scorpions who haven’t lost in four games. But the Rams are starting to come back to life after some mid-season woes, taking two of their last three.
The Storm took some lumps during the Metro Tournament but a win last week against Carlsbad got them back to their winning ways. This week, Coach Rusk will look to keep that momentum going against Cibola (5-3-1), before facing the sturdy Scorpions themselves.
In 4A the girls of Bernalillo High School (3-5-1) will have their work cut out for them as the take on the district leaders Hope Christian (9-0) at home. Hope is undefeated and has only allowed two goals all season.

VOLLEYBALL
This week...
The red-hot Cleveland Storm and the Darkhorse Rio Rams are heading into another tournament this week. This one, however, is on their home turf as CHS and RRHS will be hosting the 2024 Volleybash Tournament, Sept. 27-28.
Like the Metro Championships, Volleybash will include 16 teams, divided into four “Pools” of four each. The Pools play a Round Robin stage to determine seeding for the bracket play stage. The top seed in each Pool goes onto the “Championship Bracket”; second place to the “Gold Bracket”; third to the “Silver Bracket”; and finally, the “Bronze Bracket”.
The Storm are hoping to continue their dominance in Pool B against Centennial, Piedra Vista and Roswell. Their first match is Sept. 27 at 9 a.m. at CHS versus Roswell.
The Rams are in Pool A with Miyamura, Hobbs and a tough Albuquerque High team. Their first match is Sept. 27 at 9 a.m. at RRHS versus Hobbs.
