Bernalillo high school Spartans girls basketball team are just minutes from tipoff.
BERNALILLO 50, MANZANO 46
BERNALILLO — The Bernalillo Spartans girls basketball team (1-0) played their first game of the season against the Manzano Monarchs (0-1). The Lady Spartans defeated the Monarchs 50-46 in a close match behind an impressive double-double courtesy of center Samaria Brown.
Bernalillo held the lead for the entire of the game. However, a 20-point fourth quarter by the Monarchs had some fans scared for a moment.
However, sophomore Samaria Brown suited up for red and silver and put on a masterclass from the center position.
Brown logged a double-double by scoring 16 points and 17 rebounds. On the defensive side, she was an absolute force and had a couple of steals and blocks. Brown also had close to 10 offensive rebounds and showed some shooting prowess by draining a shot from beyond the arc (one of two 3s scored on the night).
A couple other of Lady Spartans who showed out were sophomores Rayann Downing and Trinity Calabaza.
Downing was second on the team in points with 13, and Calabaza had 10 rebounds along with three steals.
The Lady Spartans will travel to Moriarty Nov. 30 for a road matchup against the Pintos. Last year, Moriarty defeated Bernalillo in double overtime.
