Fundraiser to help Bernalillo Fire Department raise funds for installation of Baby Box

BERNALILLO — The Sandoval County Sheriff’s Posse is hosting a fundraiser March 1 to help the Bernalillo Fire Department raise funds to install a Safe Haven Baby Box at the Bernalillo Fire Station on the south side of Town Hall.

“I am very hopeful that our fundraising efforts will be successful. This is a very valuable resource for mothers in need within our community and the entire metro area,” Fire Chief Mike Legendre said.

The fundraising event will include a silent auction, food and music from band “Str8 Shot.”

A Safe Haven Baby Box is a secure location, usually installed in fire stations or hospitals, where parents can anonymously surrender a newborn baby. The boxes are equipped with safety features to protect the baby.

In March 2024, the Bernalillo Fire Department received a grant for $10,000 for the baby box. However, with installation and fees the price is approximately $24,000.

“This fundraiser will be the first of two fundraisers planned. The second fundraiser is still being worked on and will likely be in a few months,” Legendre said.

The fundraising event will be at the Sandoval County Sheriff’s Posse grounds and is $13 for a single person or $20 per couple.

Bernalillo would be the eighth location in New Mexico to offer a baby box for infant surrender.
