BERNALILLO — Recently it was camels. Now it is a pottery-making class at Coronado Historic Site in Bernalillo from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturdays through Wednesdays beginning May 3.

Robert Silas, an experienced potter and Coronado Historic Site Interpretive Ranger, of Hopi, will guide students through a pottery-making class from mixing the clay, to creating coil pots, to painting them, and naturally firing them outdoors.

There is a fee for non-members and a reduced fee for members of the Friends of Coronado and Jemez members and Museum of New Mexico Foundation members.

“This workshop provides an opportunity to learn a traditional Native pottery-making method. Robert Silas credits learning to make pottery from his godfather Kevin Navasie. His focus is on reviving the Sikyatki pottery of 1100-1600, which is a polychrome and Jeddito black-on-yellow pottery,” a press release states.

Register online through coronadojemezfriends.org/event-details-registration/pottery-class-at-kuaua. Class supplies are included, and space is limited.
