Cleveland, Bernalillo runners-up at 2025 Cheer State Competition; Rams finish sixth

ALBUQUERQUE — The Cleveland High School cheer squad came in second place at the 2025 NMAA State Spirit Championships at The Pit March 21.

“We are over the moon about the results,” Cleveland cheer head coach Madison Weaver said. “As coaches and as a team, all we wanted was to hit and end the season feeling accomplished in our routines. Getting a trophy and hearing our name announced was just an added bonus that we are incredibly grateful we got to experience!”

Last year, Cleveland finished last at the state competition, and in her first year, Weaver led the Storm to a top-two finish.

“We had three consecutive competitions this season where we did not hit our routines, and after Metro, we went back to the drawing board. We started fresh with a new approach to prepare our team for crowds and competition. We worked hard, put in a lot of hours and had many very tough practices,” Weaver said.

Cleveland finished with 171.97 on the night behind La Cueva, who won state with a total score of 179.67.

“At state, all the hard work paid off. We ended up hitting both our Game Day and Cheer with Music routines, the best we had all season,” Weaver said.

Rio Rancho High School finished in sixth place with a total score of 163.5.

In the Co-Ed Cheer A- 4A Championships, the Bernalillo Spartans proved again to be a powerhouse, finishing second with a total score of 158.37. Lovington took state with a total score of 171.37.
