BERNALILLO — Residents worried about speeding cars and crowded sidewalks brought their concerns to the Bernalillo Town Council Nov. 25.

According to residents, Calle Madera Road has become a hot spot for speeding cars, and suggested to the Bernalillo Town Council that speed bumps be placed and to increase police presence as well.

Another concern was that houses along the Calle Madera — and nearby streets — have cars blocking sidewalks, which means that people walking must walk on the street to go around them.

Both who spoke during public comment were concerned over the safety of children as many walk to play at a new park near Calle Madera and Camino Del Bosque.

“The chief is here and he has heard you, and we will also share this with the appropriate staff upstairs,” Mayor Jack Torres said.

Torres also expressed confidence that the Bernalillo planning and zoning staff would work jointly with the Bernalillo Police Department to address the issue of cars being parked on sidewalks.

After public comment, the agenda went by quickly.

Bernalillo Clerk/Administrator Ida Fierro shared that the Community of Alegria donated 91 jackets to the coat drive. People wanting to donate to the coat or toy drive can still do so and can drop off donations at Bernalillo Town Hall.

Torres also shared that the Bernalillo United Methodist Church donated $2,000 to the town. “They just really stepped up for us for the last several years and this year. So, we will make sure that we find a way to acknowledge their generosity,” he said.

Before the meeting adjourned, Torres reminded all of the Bernalillo tree lighting at 6 p.m. Dec.6. and the Bernalillo Christmas Parade at 11 a.m. Dec. 7.
