Burglar arrested for breaking into abandoned Bernalillo Pizza Hut

BERNALILL0 — Raul Herrera, 41, of Bernalillo, was arrested April 20 for burglary and controlled substance possession at the old Pizza Hut building on US 550.

According to a criminal complaint filed with the 13th Judicial District Court, a K-9 patrol unit was performing a routine welfare check at the building when they found the door was broken and duct tape covering the latch to prevent the door from locking.

Inside, officers found items that weren’t there during previous checks.

After turning a corner, police found Herrera with a bag of what the believed to be methamphetamine. They also found evidence that Herrera was stripping copper to sell.

Herrera could face three or more years in prison if he is convicted.
