BERNALILLO — Bernalillo High School held another college commitment signing inside its gymnasium May 30 to celebrate the commitment of soccer standout Aleah Madrid.

Madrid will play women’s soccer at Otero University in La Junta, Colorado.

“They made me feel like I was at home, and that was what I was looking for,” Aleah said.

Madrid, a team captain, has long been a reliable ball distributor at the midfield position.

“I know she will make a mark anywhere she goes. I know the mark she left on our program and in our hearts,” Bernalillo girl’s soccer head coach Indiana Madrid said.

Indiana helped revitalize a Spartan soccer program, and doubled their win total from the year prior.

“This is special because she is my sister and my motivation for becoming a coach to take the program under my wing, but ... I’m glad we were able to experience the last five years together,” Indiana said of coaching her sister.

This past season, Madrid earned second-team All-District honors as midfielder/forward.

“We really worked hard this year,” Aleah said. “I am super proud of my girls.”

Madrid is the third Spartan to play at the next level, joining Gabriel Trujillo, to the Salt River Scorpions junior college to play football, and Uriel Castro, who committed to Eastern New Mexico University for baseball.
