Bernalillo lose by seven in Taos, still a top seed

BERNALILLO — The Bernalillo Spartans (8-2) lost a close one on the road against the Taos Tigers (7-3) Nov. 1.
It was a heartbreaker but a minor setback for the Spartans, who ended up clinching a first-round bye in the state playoffs as the fourth seed.
The Spartans led going into the fourth quarter 14-13. However, the Tigers were able to score and convert on the two-point conversion.
The Spartan quarterback threw three interceptions but also threw for two touchdowns.
Spartan running back Nathan Encinias had a nice game, notching 82 scrimmage yards. Encinias also logged a sack while on defense.
On the defensive side, linebackers Gabe Trujillo and Mario Molinar had a busy night and combined for 26 total tackles.
The Spartans will play the winner of the Espanola Valley (7-3) vs. Manzano (5-5) game on Nov. 15 or Nov. 16 in the state quarterfinals.
Espanola Valley and Manzano will play at 6 p.m. Nov. 8.
