ALBUQUERQUE — The Bernalillo High School track and field team journeyed to Community Stadium to compete in the 2025 APS Metro Tournament May 1-2.

However, according to sprinter Nathan Encinias, they were competing for more than a trophy.

"It means a lot, actually, because we found out recently that one of our coaches got diagnosed with cancer. Mostly, we are all here running and competing for her ... this is to pay tribute to her," Encinias said. "She's like an 'auntie' to me, and she's been one of the best coaches I've ever had in my life. I don't think I would be the athlete I am without her."

Bernalillo Spartans teacher, and girls basketball coach Ashley Darnell was diagnosed with cancer toward the end of the basketball season.

"She's played at Bernalillo, she's coached at Bernalillo, so she's rooted in the community," Encinias said. "She deserves the best and all of our prayers."

A Bernalillo Spartan showing out was senior Jaden Lovato, who came in seventh place in the javelin throw, throwing the javelin 148 feet, 1/2 inch. Another standout was sophomore Thomas Moffett, who placed fourth in the high jump at 5 feet, 8 inches.

Junior Kenneth Saiz had a nice showing in the long jump, recording a jump of 20 feet, 8 inches, which landed him in seventh place.

For the girls, eighth grader Gabriella Dominguez logged a nice leap of 30 feet, 1/2 inch, and sophomore Trinity Calabaza threw 31 feet, 10 inches in the shot put.

“Although the basketball season has ended, the impact of Coach Ashley Darnell’s recent cancer diagnosis has left a lasting impression on our student-athletes," principal Alyssa Sanchez Padilla said. "In those final games, the Lady Spartans played with unmatched heart and purpose — every moment on the court became a tribute to Coach Darnell’s strength, leadership and the love she’s poured into the program. Her fight became their fuel, and their unity both on and off the court has been truly inspiring.”
